Analysis of Child Speech – Speech analysis to support differential diagnosis and inform selection of targets and intervention approaches for children with SSD
About this course
A phonetically transcribed representative sample of a child’s speech is the first step to support effective clinical decision-making for children with speech sound disorder (SSD). Moreover, further analysis of child speech is needed for some children with moderate-severe SSD, beyond that supported in published assessments such as the DEAP. This provides SLTs with an in-depth understanding of the child’s phonetic capabilities, phonological skills and productive phonological knowledge (PPK); i.e. specifically how they use sounds in words. Consequently, the findings from this analysis lay the foundation stone for accurate differential diagnosis, and evidence-based selection of appropriate targets and intervention approaches supporting effective and efficient intervention.
Furthermore, regular repeated transcription and analysis (i.e. using probes and baseline measures) also allows SLTs to monitor progress in therapy and change the intervention approach or targets as appropriate. Importantly, it also provides SLTs with evidence that can demonstrate the effectiveness of intervention and hence the value of SLT services.
Please note: This course assumes a basic familiarity with The DEAP (Diagnostic Evaluation of Articulation and Phonology), and its associated diagnostic classifications of speech sound disorder. For practitioners seeking a comprehensive overview of DEAP, this course presents an overview including the administration, scoring and analysis of the DEAP screen, subtests and Toddler Phonology Test.

Dr Jill Titterington
Consultant Speech and Language Therapist/Researcher
Dr Jill Titterington is a consultant Speech and Language Therapist/Researcher https://www.thespeechdoctorni.co.uk/ a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and one of the International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders’ Editor-in-Chiefs. Jill has ~20 years of clinical experience, and ~17 years working for Ulster University’s Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) department. Jill is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and her speciality area of teaching is in child speech sound disorder: both phonetic transcription skills, and clinical management (particularly of phonological delay and disorder). Jill provides ongoing CPD teaching and learning opportunities for qualified SLTs in these areas. Jill’s research focuses on supporting implementation of evidence to Speech and Language Therapy practice for children with speech and language difficulties. She has a particular interest in supporting the delivery of evidence-based dosage/intensity of intervention for children with moderate to severe speech sound disorder. Driven by this interest, Jill established a group of academics, researchers, and clinical/managerial SLTs (Raising Awareness of Dosage in Speech Sound Disorder (RADiSSD)) in 2023 which is working to drive change to practice across the UK and Ireland. Recent publications include a chapter on the pedagogy of clinical phonetics for students of SLT, and journal articles on applying evidence on dosage to practice for children with severe speech sound disorder, and how to work effectively with parents to increase dosage of intervention. See here for recent publications.

Course testimonials
I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It is not very often that you attend courses that you can go away and apply immediately in your practice. I felt that this course was very practical and was easy to access. Jill was an excellent presenter who kept me engaged throughout the two mornings presenting information in a clear and concise way. I would definitely recommend this course to my colleagues.
The course was excellent. Very well presented. Jill is incredibly knowledgeable. Pitched at the right level and easy to follow. I loved all the practical aspects and the practice of analysing different children’s speech. I came away with lots of new things to try with my caseload.
Thank you, the course was brilliant and I wouldn’t hesitate to attend another one offered by Course Beetle. I particularly enjoyed Jill’s method of sharing and teaching knowledge so I would particularly look for further courses that she presents.
