Makaton Training with Course Beetle

Today over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech.

In addition to children and adults with communication and learning difficulties and the community around them – for example, teachers, health professionals, friends, public service bodies etc. Makaton is increasingly used by the general public to aid communication.

Whether you are looking for a taster session to see what Makaton is all about, or are ready to start or continue your Makaton journey, we are here to help you access the Makaton training you need.

Makaton Taster sessions

What is this course?

The 90 minute Makaton Taster gives you a general introduction into what Makaton is and who uses it, with the opportunity to learn a few signs and symbols too.

Participants receive handouts covering the vocabulary they have learned and general information regarding further Makaton training and Makaton resources.

Who is this course for?

If you would like to dip a toe in the water to help decide if Makaton Training is for you, attending a Taster can be a good place to start!

Remember, a taster is a taster – and is no substitute for attending Makaton Training – so this introductory option is for those who are not yet sure if Makaton is for them.

Perhaps your group or club would all like to attend a taster as a group? Your Makaton tutor can customise the taster to adapt to your interests. We have delivered Tasters for staff groups from cafes, hairdressers, clubs – you name it!

Makaton Level 1 Training (Modules 1 and 2)

What is this course?

This course is a one-day course, which if delivered online is frequently delivered over 2 or 3 shorter sessions.

Makaton Level 1 Training is the starting point for learning Makaton. You are introduced to the Makaton Language Programme and the key principles underpinning its use.

You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and some of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary. You will receive a Participant’s Manual, which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop.

Parents, family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton at home and in their work

Makaton Level 2 Training (Modules 3 and 4)

What is this course?

This course is a one-day course, which if delivered online is frequently delivered over 2 or 3 shorter sessions.

As well as learning more about the Makaton Language Programme including answers to commonly asked questions, you will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4, and the rest of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.

Who is this course for?

Makaton Level 2 Training is for anyone who has attended Level 1 Training. Attending Levels 1 and 2 workshops will provide an excellent basic grounding in the use of Makaton.

It is essential to have been trained to Level 2 if you or your team wish to access Makaton Safeguarding Training.

Makaton Level 3 Training (Modules 5 and 6)

What is this course?

This course is a one-day course, which if delivered online is frequently delivered over 2 or 3 shorter sessions. Level 3 moves your Makaton skills on to a more advanced level of application. In this course you practise signing in conversations and learn advanced techniques to ensure your signing is conveying meaning accurately. Stages 5 to 6 signs and symbols which are taught at level 3 give you the tools for using Makaton with people who are ready learn more and develops your sign production techniques.

Who is this course for?

Makaton Level 3 Training is for individuals and organisations who want more than the basics. It is especially appropriate for those who need to use Makaton all the time at home or work, and want to feel confident using Makaton at a more advanced level.

Makaton Level 4 Training (Modules 7 and 8)

What is this course?

Makaton Level 4 Training completes the journey for those who have accessed Levels 1 -3. As with all the previous levels, this is a one-day course, which if delivered online is frequently delivered over 2 or 3 shorter sessions. The final 2 stages of the Core Vocabulary (Stages 7 and 8) are taught within this course in addition to advanced techniques for adapting and using Makaton

Who is this course for?

This course is for people who want to know the full Core Vocabulary, and to feel confident in adjusting the way they use Makaton so it is used at exactly the right level for whoever they are communicating with.

Anyone who has ambitions to become a Makaton Tutor must have Level 4 Makaton Training.

Makaton Safeguarding Workshop

What is this course?

The Makaton Safeguarding Workshop is a 2-day made up of 4 modules which can be delivered in shorter sessions over more days.

The key focus of the Makaton Safeguarding workshop is the importance of giving people the tools to be able to communicate about people, places and things in their lives. The workshop includes a workbook which guides participants to identify immediate priorities for action. This workshop teaches 300 concepts covering people (including relations, job roles etc) body parts, clothing, places, thoughts and feelings.

Who is this course for?

The Makaton Safeguarding Workshop is recommended for settings who want to take their application of Makaton to the next level and apply the principles of Makaton in a planned and thorough way to achieve best practice for safeguarding and person centred approaches.

In order to be eligible to attend a Makaton Safeguarding Workshop, Levels 1 and 2 Training must have been completed.
