About this course

This course provides Speech and Language Therapists with a comprehensive and practical introduction to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). We know that Speech and Language Therapists and practitioners working in education can be daunted by the implementation of AAC, especially with increasingly busy and complex caseloads. This introduction to AAC, a highly practical course, aims to demystify this area of practice and help attendees see the potential of using AAC approaches to great effect within their practice.

We look at the different types of AAC and who these might be suitable for. Real-life examples illustrate AAC users’ journeys, from identifying the need for AAC to assessment, provision, and implementation of an AAC system.

This course will enable Speech and Language Therapists to stay grounded in an evidence-based practice approach that puts the AAC user at the heart of all decision-making.

Throughout the course, we will incorporate and signpost to evidence-based resources for the assessment and implementation of AAC. Participants will be supported in developing a clear plan to extend and use their knowledge and skills.

Attend this introduction to AAC to:

  • Learn foundational knowledge and skills to become a supportive Communication Partner with children and young people using AAC
  • Get started identifying and supporting AAC users
  • Discover how to upskill others to increase the effectiveness of their communication at home and in education settings
  • Bridge the gap in knowledge between using visuals in the environment through to understanding individualised AAC approaches which support children/young people to progress their communication and independence using AAC

Please note: a progression option for Speech and Language Therapists is under development.
