About this course

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Award in Supporting Children and Young People’s Speech, Language and Communication Qualification number: 600/4257/6

Level 3 is the academic equivalent of A Levels. The course is studied online over 5 months (20 weeks).

Unlike other online learning packages, where it’s down to you, your computer and the materials, this course gives you support every step of the way via your own dedicated personal assessor.  You log in to the Speech and Language UK Learning Centre to access superb learning resources, including videos and interactive click-throughs. The provided learning materials, plus your own experience, provide the foundations for tackling the course tasks one at a time.

For every task you submit, you will receive feedback from your assessor. Sometimes you might need to add a little more information before your work for a particular task achieves the assessment criteria.  If this is the case, your assessor will tell you which part of your work needs amending.  Once you have provided the information required to achieve the assessment criteria, the task will be marked as complete.  The task-by-task approach adopted by the course helps break things down into manageable chunks.

Completion time

The course must be completed within 20 weeks (5 months) of enrolment.

It is possible to complete this course within 2-3 months via an intensive approach, however, it can be comfortably completed within 5 months. Prior learners report success when they set aside 2 x 2-hour sessions each week. The course is task-based, with a degree of variability in the typical time required to complete each task. Feedback is provided on a task-by-task basis enabling learners to make amendments to their original submission in order to achieve the assessment criteria for each task. The process moves forward well when candidates are able to plan in for up to 4 hours of study time per week. Employers seeking to support an employee undertaking this course are advised to allocate a half day per week of protected time.

More information

Learners gain access to this course via the Speech and Language UK Learning Centre.  Each Unit studied is supported by a brand-new suite of learning materials, prepared and curated by Speech and Language UK. These include interactive click-throughs, videos, self-assessment activities and links to further information.  Although the course requires that you are based at a setting, a significant proportion of the tasks can be completed by drawing on the learning materials and your own knowledge and experience at work.   Candidates who would like to study and complete tasks during school holiday periods will find plenty they can get on with, as long as a portion of their study time overlaps with direct access to the children or young people at the setting during term time.

Speech and Language UK

Speech and Language UK is the operating name of I CAN Charity, a registered charity in England and Wales (210031) and Scotland (SC039947)

Speech and Language UK (previously known as I CAN) is a UK Charity dedicated to giving children the speech and language skills they need so they aren’t left behind, waiting to be understood.

For 1.7 million children in the UK, learning to talk and understand words feels like an impossible hurdle. Without the right help, this can destroy their world. They feel disconnected from their family. Unable to make friends. Unfairly punished for not following instructions they don’t understand. What does the future hold for them?

The charity designs innovative tools and training for thousands of nursery assistants and teachers at the heart of the classroom. They give families the confidence and skills to help their children.  They put pressure on politicians to prioritise support for children.
