About this course

This on-demand course uses video clips and quizzes to help participants learn and revise the cues, and gain a clear understanding of the basis and principles of the cues. The aim of the course is to give teachers and teaching assistants the skills and confidence to use Cued Articulation.

Taking a structured approach to learning about speech sounds it uses a repeating formula to cover the sound system in depth. The course includes details about the crossover between spelling patterns and speech sounds and how it can be used in the classroom. It teaches cued articulation techniques and provides practical ideas for using Cued Articulation to promote the development of listening skills and early sound awareness.

Course duration

The nature of the course is detailed and in-depth. It is not recommended for anyone seeking a quick overview. The course will take one full day, or a day equivalent to study. Course delegates are given 6 months of access time to the course.

Helen Botham

Speech Pathologist - LACST, Dip Ed, M App Sci.

Helen Botham has worked as a Speech Pathologist for forty years in Melbourne and in the UK. She worked with preschool and young school-aged children in private practice and has a particular interest in speech and language problems associated with literacy difficulties.

Helen has consulted with and advised parents, teachers and carers, and she ran Cued Articulation courses for preschool and school teachers throughout Australia and overseas. She has a particular interest in issues concerning teaching Aboriginal students. Helen has conducted courses in northern Australia for teachers of Aboriginal students and has taken part in workshops for teachers of Aboriginal students in New South Wales.

Helen Botham completed a Master of Applied Science at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, where she investigated outcomes for teachers attending a Cued Articulation course. She was interested to know whether their attendance can improve the phonological and letter-sound awareness required by teachers of reading.

This resource may be of interest

This handy-sized (155mm x 235mm) paperback book of 88 pages, published by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) provides demonstrative images with full-colour coding throughout.

49 hand signs represent the manner, placing and voicing of consonants which are colour coded to give and extra visual clue in written work. 23 signs show the length, fronting and lip-rounding of vowels, diphthongs and triphthongs. The signs are logical and are based on linguistic theory.

Course testimonials

“It was very helpful learning how and where each sound is produced. I found it harder to learn the vowels so more revision is needed. It is really helpful that I can return to the course content and practice.”
