Generative AI in Speech & Language Therapy: A Practical Guide
About this course
This interactive course explores how generative AIs (such as ChatGPT) can enhance speech and language therapy practice while maintaining the core values of client-centred care. We examine practical applications of AI tools that support clinical work, reduce administrative burden, and facilitate professional development. The course is ideal for practising SLTs looking to improve their workflow, those returning to practice wanting to understand new technologies, and experienced therapists seeking to optimise their time and effectiveness.
Whether you’re curious about AI or already experimenting with it in your practice, this course offers an easy-to-follow, structured approach to using AI safely, ethically and effectively in clinical and professional contexts.
What do we mean by generative AI?
Generative AI represents a new generation of artificial intelligence systems that can create original content in response to your prompts. Unlike traditional AI tools that simply analyse or categorise information (like spell-checkers or diagnostic systems), generative AI can produce new materials, ideas, and text based on its training. For SLTs, this means having an intelligent assistant that can help create therapy resources, suggest session adaptations, and support clinical reasoning – all guided by your professional expertise and judgment. These tools represent an opportunity to enhance both clinical effectiveness and efficiency, freeing up more time for direct client care
This course will help you:
- Understand a range of AI tools relevant to SLT practice, and learn how they can support clinical decision-making
- Learn practical strategies for using AI to enhance therapy planning, and resource creation while maintaining therapeutic quality
- Master time-saving techniques for documentation, report writing, and administrative tasks
- Explore ways to use AI tools for CPD, reflective practice and keeping up with the evidence-base
- Navigate ethical considerations and best practices for incorporating AI in client-centred care

Course presenter
Rachel Barton
Speech and Language Therapist
Rachel Barton is a UK-based Speech and Language Therapist in her 30th year of practice. After 22 years in the NHS, she moved into independent work, dividing her time between clinical practice, supervision, and training.
Since 2023, Rachel has been at the forefront of exploring how generative AI can be safely and meaningfully integrated into healthcare. Through workshops, online resources, and collaborations with national bodies like the RCSLT, she has become a leading advocate for using AI to support practitioners’ wellbeing, improve efficiency, and maintain the highest standards of care.
Rachel developed the RCSLT’s “Introduction to Integrating Generative AI in Speech and Language Therapy” eLearning module and has presented at national conferences and events.
In November 2024, Rachel Barton published a ‘Pledge for Responsible Generative AI use in Speech and Language Therapy’. While this free resource was initially aimed at practising SLTs, it has relevance for anyone using generative AI within healthcare.
