Makaton Safeguarding
About this course
The Makaton Safeguarding Workshop is a 2-day training, comprising four modules. The training can be delivered in shorter sessions over more days.
The key focus of the Makaton Safeguarding workshop is the importance of giving people the tools to be able to communicate about people, places and things in their lives. The workshop includes a workbook which guides participants to identify immediate priorities for action. This workshop teaches 300 concepts covering people (including relations, job roles etc) body parts, clothing, places, thoughts and feelings.

Course topics
This unique workshop provides signs and symbols for a range of vocabulary covering several topics:
- People: family, relationships and people around us
- Body parts and clothes
- Places
- Feelings: feelings, thoughts and behaviours (including bullying and abuse)
- Sexual behaviour
Participants also work through the process of creating personalised and specific plans for individual Makaton users and those they communicate with. The emphasis is on ensuring potentially complex information is made accessible and the Makaton user is given tools to support their understanding and capacity to express themselves and be listened to within safe and inclusive environments.

The Makaton Charity advises as follows regarding overseas applications to join UK Makaton courses:
In theory, you can access the online Makaton training from anywhere in the world, but please bear in mind that British Makaton uses signs drawn from British Sign Language. When Makaton is used in other countries it needs to be adapted to suit the local culture and dominant spoken and signed languages. Unless spoken English and British Makaton are the dominant language and alternative/augmentative communication (AAC) methods are used where you are (eg. in an English-speaking International school community), you might find it counter-productive and confusing for people. At the moment we only have printed versions of the workshop participant’s manuals available so you would need to pay additional postage for this and allow extra time for it to reach you.
